As we near the close of the COP26 Climate Change Conference in Glasgow, Net Zero and the public’s collective consciousness to be green has inspired us to share what we’re doing to combat climate change.

At Castle Water, we’re committed to helping our over 400 employees tackle climate change. In our environmental policy, we commit to business practises that minimise the consumption of resources that contribute to climate change. Our weekly company e-newsletters provide advice and tips to encourage sustainable habits and behaviours at home and at our offices.

Castle Water employees are encouraged to minimise emissions while travelling, by car sharing or by using public transport. We support our employees to opt for digital rather than printed solutions where possible, and to carry out work as many work tasks as possible in environmentally responsible ways. As a company, we’re mindful about protecting the UK’s water network by learning from and supporting national campaigns like Unblocktober and Plastic Free July. Our continued corporate commitment to tackling climate change has seen the recent installation of three electric vehicle charging points in the employee car park.

Last month, Castle Water was awarded a share of £36M of funding for the Water Breakthrough Challenge, a pilot scheme aiming to improve drought resistance and incentivise business customers to save water.

At Castle Water, we manage more than 350,000 UK business water and wastewater customers, and one of our largest operations is billing. In August, we announced that we’re carbon balancing our printing operations, and are set to balance more than 18,000kg of carbon emissions in 2021. That’s the equivalent of taking 15 cars off the road for an entire year. We’re further reducing the amount of paper we use and its associated carbon footprint by providing one bill for all our water services, and by making it easy for our customers to switch to paperless billing.

Perhaps the greatest impact we can have on the fight against climate change, is by supporting all of our customers to be water efficient.

Continuous improvement to our online customer portal, MyAccount, and other online self-service tools including live webchat, make it easier for our customers to manage their business water to become more efficient. Our social media campaign #Meter Reading Monday encourages and reminds our customers to submit monthly water meter readings. Monthly meter readings help to keep bills up-to-date while improving the understanding of water consumption to help improve efficiency. This can even highlight a water leak so it can be found and fixed quickly to save water and money.

We support our customers by offering free, practical advice on improving their water efficiency which has the combined benefits of protecting the environment and proactively reducing their water bill. Our free online resources to help our customers engage with their staff and encourage cultural changes that result in less water being used. Our twice weekly blog and daily social media content is jam-packed with practical ways businesses of all sizes can save water, cut costs, and get the most out of their Castle Water account.

The collective power of business water efficiency, recycling and takings tips to reduce our carbon footprint all help in the fight against climate change.
