Golf Course Greens – A Quiet Revolution in Water Efficiency

Reimagining Water Use Across the UK’s Golf Industry

Castle Water is pioneering water efficiency in one of the UK’s most water-dependent sectors — golf. With a 97.3% meter read success rate, we are already industry leaders in metering, but our Golf Course Greens programme goes beyond data. It’s a collaborative, sector-specific sustainability initiative, delivering long-term resilience without compromising course quality.

Our work with golf clubs across the UK supports the government’s target to reduce non-household water consumption by 9% by 2037, while showcasing how innovation, data, and partnership can drive real environmental change.

From Insight to Action: Listening to the Industry

“Water sustainability for the future is very, very important.”
Craig Boath, Head of Sustainability, Carnoustie Golf Links

At clubs like Carnoustie, Kingsbarns, Blairgowrie and Royal Troon, water efficiency is already part of everyday operations — from state-of-the-art irrigation systems to smart metering, borehole abstraction, and recycling rainwater for vegetable polytunnels.

These venues understand that sustainability isn’t optional — it’s essential.

“We need to be more data-driven so we can make better informed decisions and make the most of our resources.”
Innes Knight, Facility Manager, Kingsbarns

Our Collaborative Approach

Castle Water works directly with golf course managers, wholesalers, and industry bodies to:

  • Detect leaks in aging systems before they become major issues
  • Install smart meters with Thames Water for real-time tracking
  • Explore non-potable alternatives at venues like Wentworth Club (with Affinity Water)
  • Deploy Automatic Meter Reading (AMR) with Scottish Water at 10 of Scotland’s most iconic courses, including St Andrews and Carnoustie

“The data is very important — if we can measure it, we can manage it.”
Stuart Wilson, Manager, Blairgowrie Golf Club

Supporting Smarter, Greener Courses

The sustainability efforts extend beyond the greens:

  • Waterless urinals and efficient toilets in clubhouses
  • Metered mains water for precise consumption tracking
  • Data-led irrigation that adjusts water delivery to the exact needs of each area
  • Fescue grass planting to reduce water demand
  • Beehives, biodiversity initiatives, and rainwater harvesting

“It’s members’ money that funds our irrigation investment — they’re fully behind what we do.”
Stephen Anthony, Secretary, Royal Troon Golf Club

Shaping the Future of Golf

We’re also collaborating with key bodies like BIGGA, GEO, the R&A, and irrigation experts TORO and Rain Bird to promote industry-wide certification that could see compliant clubs exempted from future drought restrictions.

“Water is a resource that’s not going to be there forever unless we look after it.”
Craig Boath

This forward-thinking programme is helping clubs become resilient, resource-efficient, and future-ready—proving that water stewardship and course excellence can go hand-in-hand.

A Model of Values in Action

The Golf Course Greens programme is a clear example of Castle Water’s core values at work:

  • Fair: Helping clubs reduce waste and cost
  • Transparent: Providing real-time water data to inform smart choices
  • Tenacious: Tackling systemic inefficiencies in legacy infrastructure
  • Supportive: Empowering clubs to lead in sustainability through actionable insights

Looking Ahead

With the support of Castle Water, more golf clubs are embracing data-led water stewardship, protecting not just their courses but their communities and the environment. As demand on water resources intensifies, our role in supporting the industry’s sustainable evolution has never been more important.

This is more than efficiency. It’s a quiet revolution.
