Make every drop count
World Water Week, running from 12 to 16 May 2025, is a national awareness campaign led by Water Wise to highlight the importance of using water efficiently and sustainably. As the UK faces increasing pressure on water resources, from climate change, growing demand and seasonal droughts, businesses have a vital role to play in reducing waste and improving resilience.
At Castle Water, we support businesses across sectors with the tools, insight, and services to save water and money. This year, we’re proud to support World Water Week by highlighting practical steps businesses in agriculture, hospitality, and beyond can take to become more water efficient.
Why water efficiency matters for business
Efficient water management is no longer just an environmental consideration – it’s a commercial necessity. Whether you’re running a hotel, a care home, a restaurant, or a working farm, water is often essential to your daily operations. Yet inefficiencies such as leaks, outdated equipment, or poor behaviour practices can cost your business thousands each year.
Through metering insight, leak detection, behaviour change, and device upgrades, Castle Water helps businesses stay compliant, reduce consumption, and operate more sustainably.
What’s happening this week
Each day of World Water Week focuses on a different area of water use, offering tips that can apply to both commercial and domestic environments. We’ve summarised the themes and provided business-focused advice tailored to our customers.
12 May – Laundry Legend: Make every wash count
Whether you’re running a laundrette, a salon washing towels, or a hotel managing linens daily, laundry is a major area of water consumption.
Key efficiency strategies:
- Use full loads and modern, water-efficient washing machines.
- Switch to cold water cycles where possible to save energy.
- Avoid over-washing uniforms and linens unnecessarily.
- Air dry when feasible to reduce dryer energy usage.
- Benchmark water use and track with AMR (Automated Meter Reading) for operational insights.
13 May – Tap Guardian: Save water, one drop at a time
Kitchen and washroom taps are some of the most used, and most easily wasted, water sources in any business. Simple device upgrades and behaviour changes can make a huge difference.
Business tips:
- Install tap aerators to reduce flow without affecting pressure.
- Train staff to turn taps off during handwashing or prep.
- Repair dripping taps promptly – one drip per second can waste over 5,000 litres a year.
- Fit Hippo bags or dual-flush converters in toilet cisterns to reduce flush volume.
For employers, Castle Water’s GetWaterFit tool helps assess per-employee water use and savings potential.
14 May – Shower Saviour: Smarter water outdoors
Beyond showers, this theme extends to hosepipes, sprinklers, and irrigation – especially important for agriculture, landscaping, and hospitality with outdoor amenities.
Water-saving improvements:
- Install water timers and soil moisture sensors on irrigation systems.
- Water during early morning or evening to minimise evaporation.
- Recycle greywater where permitted for irrigation use.
- Maintain pipes and sprinklers to avoid costly outdoor leaks.
- Consider rainwater harvesting to supplement supply.
Farms and rural businesses benefit from Castle Water’s high meter reading success rate (96%) and can access preferential rates through our partnership with NFU Scotland.
15 May – Dishwasher Defender: Wash wisely, waste less
Dishwashers are central to water use in commercial kitchens, cafes, and hospitality sites. Improving their efficiency supports operational cost savings.
Recommendations:
- Only run dishwashers when full.
- Use eco settings and avoid pre-rinsing under running water.
- Service machines regularly to ensure optimal operation.
- Track usage trends with AMR to detect inefficient cycles.
16 May – Leak Buster: Find and fix sneaky leaks
Leaks are one of the most common and costly causes of water loss. Worse, many go undetected – especially in larger properties or rural locations.
Castle Water supports leak prevention through:
- Regular meter readings and usage tracking via your customer portal.
- Advanced AMR solutions that alert you to unexpected spikes.
- Leak detection and repair support through our specialist network.
- Educational resources on spotting and responding to hidden faults.
Even small changes, like replacing faulty washers or checking your cisterns, can prevent large bills and water waste.
