Automatic Meter Reading (AMR) is the smart option if you want to take control of your business water. It will enable you to access real-time information about your water consumption. AMR is similar to a smart meter, but it uses different technology that collects more detailed data than a smart meter, making it suitable for larger and multi-site businesses.

AMR does so much more than simply record how much water your business uses. It will also help you to become more water efficient. AMR collects data about your consumption patterns, which means you will be able to track when and where your business uses water. Through having more detailed data, you will be able to take control of your water consumption, identify areas where you can make water efficiencies and assess how successful those efficiencies are after you’ve implemented them.

Leak alerts

We are always advising our customers to keep checking their meter readings as this is a good way of detecting leaks. If there is an unexplained spike in water usage, it’s more than likely there is a hidden leak. This relies on you remembering to keep checking the meter reading - and the longer you leave it, the longer it will take to detect a leak. With AMR technology, if there is a sudden spike in water usage, you and selected members of your team will immediately be sent an alert. Being alerted to a problem as soon as it occurs will enable you to investigate the problem quickly, locate the leak and get it fixed without delay.

Fixing the problem as soon as possible will save you a lot of money in wasted water. It’s estimated that a moderate leak - by which we mean the loss of one litre per second - on the mains could add approximately £55,000 to your annual water bill.

Policing water consumption

Our recent partnership with one of the largest non-metropolitan police forces in England provides an example of just how useful AMR can be. The force approached us because they wanted to trial AMR as a way of becoming more sustainable. The trial proved to be successful as we were able to identify areas where the force could be a lot more water efficient. The installation of the meters enabled the force to save 10% on its annual water bill (approximately £40,000 saving), with an ROI in just one year. In doing so, the force exceeded its own financial and environmental targets for reducing water consumption.
